Summer, sun, sunflowers. They go together like clowns and crying babies. When we see sunflowers we say yellow, and when we say yellow we say sun! Let’s celebrate summer, and read about the summer queen: the Helianthus.
Shimmering like the sun, the Helianthus, or sunflower flaunts its handsome blooms. No doubt she truly is the queen of the summer flower kind. Every sunflower consists of hundreds of disc florets, which emerge in a spiral fashion. The heart is surrounded by the bright yellow flower petals, which in turn embody the sunny effect of the flower. Although we all immediately associate sunflowers with yellow, they also exist in orange, brown and dark red colours!
The best-known variety of the moment is the Helianthus Sunrich Orange. Nowadays the sunflower is available year-round. However, the varieties cultivated outdoors are solely available from June to September. The best quality sunflowers are cultivated during this period.
Characteristics
Helianthus belong to the Compositae family. Its Latin name (Helianthus) is derived from the words Helios, which means sun, and Anthos, which means flower and its origins lie in North America. The sunflower is an annual plant, and has the ability to reach great heights. The largest sunflower ever measured reached a height of 23 feet!! When sunflowers are kept on the field the flower heads fill up with sun seeds, which birds love (and people too for that matter)! Sunflowers are also bred and cultivated for production of sun seed oil, which is squeezed from the seeds.

Helianthus Both sunflowers and sunflower hearts are very decorative. Care tips for Helianthus correspond to the usual: Cut an inch or two down from the stem, remove the bottom leaves and put the stems in clean water with flower food.
